Getting Started with SpeakONUpdated 12 days ago

Article type: Product Guide  |  Covers: Device + App

What SpeakON is

SpeakON is a voice input system made up of two parts that work as one: the SpeakON device and the SpeakON app.

The device is a compact magnetic accessory that attaches to the back of your iPhone. It has a physical Record button and a dedicated microphone. Press it in any app, speak, and your text appears at the cursor — without touching a keyboard.

The app is where all the intelligence lives. It processes your voice, applies features like tone adjustment and list formatting, and delivers the output to wherever you're writing. It also works on its own using your iPhone's built-in microphone.

The two are designed to be used together. The device gives you a frictionless way to trigger input from anywhere; the app makes sure what comes out is clear, correctly formatted, and right for the context you're writing in.

Set it up

Setup takes a few minutes. Follow these steps in order to get everything ready.

1

Download the SpeakON app and log in

Download from the App Store. Supported login methods: Apple, Google, or email (verification code). Logging in creates your account — no separate registration.

2

Add the SpeakON keyboard

Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard. Select SpeakON, then tap it and turn on Allow Full Access. This is required once — after that it works in any app.

3

Turn on the SpeakON device

Hold the Power button on the back of the device for 2 seconds. The front indicator light glows blue.

4

Pair through the SpeakON app

In the app, go to Device and tap Add Device. Follow the on-screen steps. Connect here — not through your iPhone's Bluetooth settings.

5

Attach the device to your iPhone

Press it magnetically to the back of your phone. If your case doesn't support magnetic attachment, use the included magnetic ring.

After pairing once, the device reconnects automatically when it's in range and Bluetooth is on.

How it works

Once the device is paired and attached, the workflow is three steps.

1

Open any app and click on the text-box field

SpeakON works in any app with a text field — email, messages, notes, documents, social apps, and more. Tap the field where you want text to appear.

2

Long-press the Record button

The indicator light turns solid green when recording is active.

3

Speak, then release

Say what you want to write. Release the button when you're done. The processed text appears at your cursor.

Each session runs for up to 5 minutes. When the limit is reached, the light flashes red and you'll feel one long vibration. Press again to start a new session.

The device also records on its own when it's not connected to your phone. Those recordings sync to the app the next time you connect via Bluetooth.

Features

Four features run on every recording. They work together, and most are on by default.

Smart Polish

Smart Polish cleans up your speech before it reaches the text field. It removes filler words ("um," "uh"), cuts repeated content, and handles self-corrections. You speak the way you naturally think. The output is ready to send.

You say:

"Let's meet Friday... actually no, Monday morning."

You get:

"Let's meet on Monday morning."

Settings:

On — polishes every recording automatically (default)

Off — keeps exactly what you said

Ask — shows both versions and lets you choose after each recording

Smart List

Smart List detects when you're listing items and formats the output as a structured numbered or bulleted list. Speak a list the way you'd say it out loud and it arrives organized.

You say:

"Three things: meet the deadline, check quality, and send the report."

You get:

1. Meet the deadline   2. Check quality   3. Send the report

Settings:

On — auto-formats lists when detected (default)

Off — keeps all output in paragraph format

Attune

Attune adjusts the tone and register of your text based on the app you're writing into. You choose a mode; Attune reads which app is active and applies the right style for that context. The same Cordial setting writes differently in Gmail than in Slack.

Cordial:

"Hi Emma, Just a quick follow-up — the report was due yesterday, and we'll need it today as the client is waiting. Thanks,"

Formal:

"Dear Emma, I wanted to follow up regarding the report that was due yesterday. We would need it completed today, as the client is awaiting it. Thank you,"

Attune only works when your transcription language is set to English.

Translation

Translation converts your speech into another language in real time. Speak in one language and receive output in another, with no extra steps.

You say (English):

"We're a small team. Could we start with a trial order of around 500 units?"

You get (Japanese):

「私たちは小さなチームです。まずは500個ほどのトライアル注文から始められますか?」

Default: Speaking English outputs Japanese. Speaking any other language outputs English. Both can be changed in Settings.

Supported languages: English, Japanese, Chinese, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese.

Common questions

Can I use the app without the device?

Yes. The app works on its own using your iPhone's built-in microphone. The device adds a physical button, a dedicated microphone, and the ability to record when your phone isn't nearby.

Does SpeakON work in every app?

Yes, in any app with a standard text field. Email, messages, notes, documents, social apps — anywhere you can type, you can use SpeakON.

What if I record when my phone isn't nearby?

The device saves recordings locally. The next time you connect the device to the app via Bluetooth, those recordings sync automatically, oldest first.

Which iPhones are compatible?

Any iPhone running iOS 16 or above. The device attaches magnetically to iPhone 12 and above. Check your iOS version in Settings > General > About.

Do I need to connect the device every time?

No. After the first pairing, the device reconnects automatically when it's in range and Bluetooth is on.

What happens when my Pro trial ends?

Smart Polish, Smart List, and Translation stay available on all plans with no limits. Your word quota returns to the Free or Starter level. You can upgrade to Pro at any time from the Account page.
